10-12 Reinhard Straub will present:

“Designer Drugs, Substance Use Disorders & Treatment”A designer drug is a structural or functional equivalent of a controlled substance that has been designed to mimic the pharmacological effects of the original drug. Some designer drugs were originally synthesized by academic or industrial researchers in an effort to discover more potent derivatives with fewer side effects.  Illicit labs around the world are in the business of manufacturing and distributing these drugs and their own versions.  With increasing pharmacological expertise drugs are being produced to avoid being classified as illegal and to avoid detection in standard drug tests.  Synthetic designer drugs are readily available online and are now drugs of abuse. With increasing frequency, patients with serious medical and psychiatric complications related to the use of "bath salts", synthetic cannabinoids, “Molly” etc. are presenting in emergency rooms and treatment centers.  Their use needs to be understood in the context of traditional Substance Use Disorder treatment and recovery with special attention focused on initial clinical interventions and co-morbid psychiatric illnesses.

Reinhard Straub is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Clinical Supervisor (LCDCS). Reinhard has worked in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health field since 1989.  Reinhard has developed, initiated & directed numerous substance abuse programs in New York, Connecticut, & Rhode Island.  He has served as a faculty member at Empire State College, State University of New York and has conducted over 1000 clinical interventions while employed by the NYS Medical Society’s  Committee for Physician Health and as a private clinician.  In 2011 Reinhard founded Clinical Services of Rhode Island, a system of 3 licensed substance abuse outpatient facilities which were acquired by American Addiction Centers.  Reinhard was the Clinical & Business Development Liaison for American Addiction Centers until December 2016.  In January 2017 Reinhard returned to private practice with offices in New London & Madison, CT and Warwick, RI.
